Stump Grinding in Eatonville
A stump left after a tree comes down keeps sprouting, feeds termites and fungi, and gets in the way of the mower. We grind it below grade, chase the surface roots you choose, and write the depth and cleanup into your quote before the machine arrives.

What stump grinding does and when it makes sense
Stump grinding cuts a stump away with a spinning wheel fitted with carbide teeth. The wheel sweeps side to side and chews the wood into chips until the stump sits several inches below the soil line. The lateral roots stay in the ground and break down slowly, which is why grinding is far less disruptive to your yard than pulling a whole root ball out with an excavator.
It is the right call when you want to replant, lay sod, run a bed edge or simply mow straight across the spot. It is also worth doing soon after a removal. A fresh stump of laurel oak or camphor can push suckers for a year or more, and a rotting one in our warm, humid climate is an easy home for subterranean termites and wood-decay fungi.
Landscaping Eatonville is family-owned and has been in business since 2018. Before we start, you get a written quote that names each stump, the depth we will grind to, which roots are included and what happens to the chips. Nothing gets added once the grinder is running.
What your stump grinding job includes
- Utility locate before we grind
- Grinding disturbs soil, so we confirm buried utilities are marked through Florida 811 before the work date. We also flag sprinkler heads and shallow lateral lines ourselves, since those are not part of a utility locate.
- Grinding to a stated depth
- Your written estimate lists the depth below grade for each stump. Shallower works under sod. Deeper makes sense where a new tree or a hardscape base is going in.
- Surface root chasing
- Roots that ridge the lawn or trip the mower can be ground out along their run. We mark which ones are included so there is no question later.
- Chip handling
- Grindings are a mix of wood chips and soil. You choose whether we rake them back into the hole, spread them in a bed, or haul them away and backfill with clean topsoil.
- Cleanup of the work area
- We blow chips off driveways, walks and pool decks and rake the surrounding lawn so the spot is the only thing that looks different.
Signs a stump is ready to come out
New shoots from the base
Suckers around the stump mean the roots are still alive and feeding sprouts. Cutting them back only buys a few weeks.
Mushrooms or soft, crumbling wood
Fungal growth shows the wood is decaying. That decay can spread to nearby roots and attract termites toward your home.
Roots lifting sod or pavers
Thick lateral roots near the surface create ridges, scalp the lawn and can heave walkways or patio edges.
You are planning new work in that spot
New sod, a planting bed or a hardscape project all need the stump gone and the hole properly backfilled first.
Mowing around it every week
A stump in the lawn costs time on every cut and is a common place for blades and trimmer line to get damaged.
How the work goes on the day
- 1
Walkthrough and written estimate
We measure each stump at ground level, check gate width and slope, and note irrigation, fences and structures nearby. You get the scope and price in writing before you schedule.
- 2
Setup and protection
We bring a compact grinder sized for your access and place shields where chips could hit windows, cars or screen enclosures. Marked sprinkler heads get extra clearance.
- 3
Grinding
The wheel takes the stump down in passes to the agreed depth, then follows the listed surface roots. Most single residential stumps take well under an hour of grinding.
- 4
Chips, backfill and cleanup
We handle the grindings the way you chose at the walkthrough, level the area and clean hard surfaces. We walk the spot with you before we leave if you are home.

What moves the price of stump grinding
Grinding is priced on how much wood has to come out and how hard it is to reach. We measure on site and write each factor into your quote, so the number you approve is the number on the invoice.
- Diameter and number of stumps
- Width at ground level drives grinding time more than height. Several stumps on one visit cost less each than separate trips.
- Depth and root work
- Grinding deeper or following surface roots across the lawn adds wheel time. You decide how much is needed for what comes next.
- Wood type and condition
- Dense hardwoods like live oak grind slower than pine. Palm stumps are fibrous and usually quick, while very dry or partly rotted wood can hide rocks and debris.
- Access and nearby obstacles
- Narrow gates, slopes, fences, foundations and irrigation lines close to the stump all slow the work and call for more careful setup.
- Chip removal and backfill
- Leaving grindings on site is the simplest option. Hauling them off and bringing in topsoil adds material and labor.
Stump grinding questions
Something not covered here? (407) 537-4177
Will grinding remove all of the roots?
No. Grinding removes the stump and the roots we list, down to the stated depth. The deeper lateral roots stay underground and decompose over several years. They rarely cause trouble once the stump is gone.
Can you grind near my sprinkler lines or fence?
Usually, yes. We locate and mark heads and lines during the walkthrough and work slowly near them. If a stump sits right against a fence post or slab, we explain in writing how close we can safely get. If a line is cut anyway, our irrigation crew can repair it.
What should I do with the chips?
Grindings work as a rough mulch in beds away from your home's foundation. They are not good under sod because they settle and pull nitrogen as they break down. If you plan to lay grass, we recommend we haul them and backfill with topsoil.
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
You can, but grind deeper and offset the new tree a few feet if possible. Old roots and decaying wood in the planting hole make it harder for a new tree to establish.
What if something gets damaged during the work?
We are fully insured, and we take care to prevent damage in the first place with shields and marked utilities. Any risk we see at the walkthrough, like a stump touching a foundation, is noted in the written scope you sign off on.
Do you also take the tree down?
Yes. Our tree trimming and removal and palm tree pruning and removal crews can fell the tree, and we can price grinding the stump for the same visit.
Get the stump measured before any work starts
We will walk the yard, measure each stump and put depth, roots and cleanup in writing. The estimate is free, and we serve Eatonville, Maitland, Winter Park and nearby towns.
